The Masters Degree Courses
AL 842: Writing Workshop for Teachers
Instructors: Janet Swenson, Mitch Nobis, & Renee Webster
Summer 2012
I was one of eight teachers selected to participate in the Summer Institute for the Red Cedar Writing Project (an extension of the National Writing Project) in 2012. Three elementary, three middle school, and two high school teachers from varying school backgrounds came together for 15 days in the summer to dive deeper into issues relating to our students' and our own writing. We talked about teaching, assessing, and the process of writing. I cannot begin to explain this experience in one paragraph, so please check out my Red Cedar Writing Project website that I made as a portfolio to showcase my learning.

TE 846: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Instructor: Jen Knight
Spring 2013
Though I took this course as an elective, it also fulfilled the reading course requirement set forth by the State of Michigan in order to obtain my Professional Teaching Certificate. The course was organized around five broad topical areas. These include: [1] cultural and linguistic differences (working with ELL students); [2] individual motivation differences; [3] language and learning problems and tools for screening such literacy issues; [4] instructional arrangements to accommodate learning differences; and [5] the core components of literacy instruction (phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary knowledge, reading and writing fluency, reading comprehension, reading and writing connections, and literacy across the disciplines). We read scholarly articles and participated in online chats to discuss the topics more thoroughly. In addition, I did a Literacy Learner Project where I assessed a student and taught him lessons to improve his reading fluency.

Instructors: Matthew Koehler, Andrea Zellner, Joshua Rosenberg, William Cain, Chris Sloan, & Michelle Schira
Spring 2013
This online course focused on creating a capstone E-Portfolio (this website) to showcase the professional work I completed in my Master's degree program. In addition, I wrote three essays that explain what I have learned during my time in the MAET program at MSU.
